Les Diablerets

GENERALITIES

Before 1990, this course was held at Saas Fee and is therefore also known as ``Saas-Fee Course of the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy''. For several years now, the course has been held at Les Diablerets, another very pleasant resort in the Swiss Alps.

LECTURES

The lecturers of the 30th course are Rashid Sunyaev, Steven M. Kahn and Peter von Ballmoos. The course is intended mainly for post-graduate astronomers and physicists who wish to broaden their knowledge in the field. Detailed list of the lectures (click here) We plan to publish the course lectures in the Springer `Saas Fee Advanced Course Lecture Notes' series. The proceedings book containing the full manuscripts will be sent to all participants as soon as available, free of charge.

SCHEDULE

Course registration

All participants must register at the Course Registration Desk in the hotel entrance hall.
Opening hours: Sunday, April 2, from 4pm to 7pm; and Monday, April 3, from 8:30am to 10am.

Welcome cocktail

All registered participants are invited to an informal welcome reception in the hotel bar on Sunday, April 2, from 6:30-7:30pm.

Lecture timetable

The lectures will be given in English and take place in the Cultural Center located 200m from the hotel:

Monday 3rd to Friday 7th April	at 08h45 to 11h30	and 17h00 to 18h45
Saturday 8th April	at 08h45 to 10h30

ACCOMMODATION

Standard accommodation is with the EUROTEL in Les Diablerets. Organization of alternative accommodations is on the responsibility of the participants.
Accommodation and food are at the expense of the participants; please pay directly to the hotel.
Hotel reservations can be made on the registration/payment form. Prices below include breakfast and dinner (half-board).

LEISURE

The skiing area of Les Diablerets ranges from 1200 to over 3000 metres (for a map, see here). If the weather conditions allow, skiing enthusiasts have the possibility to purchase a half-day ticket valid for the afternoon.

ACCOMPANYING MEETING: OBSERVING WITH INTEGRAL

Preceding the 30th Saas-Fee Course a spring school Observing with INTEGRAL will take place from March 29th to April 1st at the same location. In addition to training on proposal submission and data analysis for the INTEGRAL satellite, this school will offer a special session dedicated to nucleosynthesis.

Participants of the 30th Saas Fee Course will benefit from a reduced fee for the INTEGRAL school. For further details, see here.

HOW TO GET TO LES DIABLERETS

By car:

from the North and the East:
Expressway:    or	Basel - Bern - Vevey - Aigle Zürich - Bern - Vevey - Aigle
from the West:
Expressway:	Genève - Lausanne - Vevey - Aigle
from the South:
Highway:    and then Expressway:	Simplon - Brig - Sion Sion - Aigle
from Aigle:
follow the main mountain road from Aigle to Les Diablerets.

By train:

From anywhere in Europe, get to Lausanne to take the direct train Lausanne - Brig, get off at Aigle and change to the local railway system  Aigle - Le Sépey - Les Diablerets. There is at least one connection per hour from Lausanne to Les Diablerets.
Have a look at the timetable for convenient trains or consult the electronic timetable of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB-CFF-FFS). Specify `Les Diablerets' as your destination. You can enter major European cities as departure station to get direct connections from abroad.

By plane:

The nearest airport is Geneva [GVA]. The main Swiss airport is Zürich [ZRH]. Trains depart hourly from the airport railway stations in Zürich and Geneva to Lausanne. Connections to Les Diablerets are as indicated above.

Bus to the hotel:

On Sunday, April 2nd, between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., the EUROTEL hotel bus will take participants from the train station in Les Diablerets to the hotel. After 8:00 p.m., you may call the hotel reception from the station to be picked up by the shuttle.
The EUROTEL is located at about 400m on your right when leaving the station.
